PATRICIA LIVERMAN - Peeled Paint Collection
Patricia is interested in paint as a physical material as well as a medium of representation, the adaptive aspects of paint, and it’s capacity to create illusion or simply cover a surface. Her work is fabricated from paint peeled from paintings that she made previously. Initially cutting and removing small sections of paint from thickly painted, monochromatic compositions to create "scars" in the paintings, Patricia's interest shifted to the removed pieces themselves and the reassembling of these fragments to create new wholes. By reconstructing from such pieces, her new works carry with them a history of works that preceded them - brushstrokes once intended to create a different image, pigments and marks buried beneath the latter layers of paint applications, continued to evolve and stratify unseen. The interplay between the choices and structure in making these new images and forms, and the random and arbitrary qualities of color, texture and shape of the pieces, became a process that created accidental results. Patricia holds a MFA in Painting from California State University Los Angeles and a BFA in Environmental Design from East Carolina University in North Carolina.
